Reno, NV, April 10, 2015 – Good Luck Macbeth Theatre, reeling from the success of The Game Show Show and In Our Own Backyard, premieres the latest production in their 2015 season, Venus in Fur. Producing Artistic Director, Joe Atack, lends his incomparable talents as he directs Ashley Marie James and Michael Jackson in this erotic and provocative play.
Venus in Fur, by David Ives, relates the story of Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, who is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic novel Venus in Fur. Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress, oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas' interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. “We are very excited at GLM to bring the incredible Venus in Fur by David Ives to Reno audiences,” relates Atack. “As a director this is the kind of play you want to work on and I can't say enough about how truly brilliant the writing is or how amazing the characters that inhabit it are.” “Vanda’s a dream to play,” states James. “She confident, crass, smart, witty, seductive and highly underestimated. She’s a total blast and I’m loving the whole process.” Venus in Fur fits beautifully in with our theme of “We Tell Stories Here”. Brilliant, sexy and thought provoking Venus in Fur delves fearlessly into the complicated nature of modern relationships - personal and professional - challenging all our preconceived ideas on love, sex, gender, and power. Venus in Fur opens April 10th and runs for three weeks closing April 25th. Performances are at 7:30pm with a matinee performance April 19th at 2:00pm. Tickets are available at Never Ender or online. Tickets are $15 pre-sale or $18 at the door. What lies beneath the surface as a community attempts to uncover the events leading up to the incident and heal from the trauma. Producing Artistic Director, Joe Atack, relates “GLM aspires to give a voice to many issues we face in the 21st Century.” Atack goes on to say “In Our Own Backyard explores perhaps one of the most troubling problems in the United States today ,something we here in Reno and Sparks have also sadly faced in recent years, school shootings” “I was inspired to write this piece due to necessity,” relates Spotlight Youth Theatre Director Rachel Lopez. Rachel Lopez, who studied at U.S.I.U, Old Globe Theatre, and Second City, has been performing, directing, and teaching for almost thirty years. According to Lopez: “I was searching for a youth play with a more sophisticated script that addressed a relevant issue that kids could relate to but I couldn't find one. After much research and searching I finally realized I was going to have to write the play I wanted to produce.” “In Our Own Backyard” tackles a number of social and cultural issues including bullying, peer pressure, family trauma, and school violence. Lopez states “This age has always been a challenging time in most people's lives but today, with all the social media and technology, it seems even worse.” “In Our Own Backyard” premieres March 12th at 7:30pm and runs through the weekend closing Sunday March 15th 2:00pm. Tickets are $15 pre-sale and $18 at the door. Tickets are available online or through brown paper tickets. Show contains adult themes and some strong language. "BRAVE NEW WORKS AT GLM"
deepsouth film screening huge successdeepsouth is a documentary exploring the often unspoken story about HIV in the rural southern American region. The film screening was part of World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to spread awareness about AIDS, support those living with HIV, and remember those who have passed away. Since 1988 World AIDS Day has been the first global health day celebrated worldwide. This day is an occasion for participants to learn the facts about HIV and put their knowledge into action.
We were so honored and thrilled to host this incredible event bringing public health activists, HIV speakers, and community agencies - including Northern Nevada HOPES, UNR, and Northern Nevada Outreach Team - to engage in a constructive dialogue around HIV prevention. Though medical advancements have made HIV/AIDS a more manageable disease than 20 years ago, other factors including poverty, racism, homophobia contribute to making the virus a life-threatening condition. Similarly, stigma and misinformation continue to run rampant impacting the mental well-being of those living with the disease. At GLM we believe in continuing to bridge and marry art and activism together as we aim to tell stories here that are relevant and prevalent to our community. Check out the full article here: http://www.movoto.com/reno-nv/moving-to-reno/ We are so thrilled and excited for our 2015 season; we will make announcements about the upcoming year shortly. Here's a little tidbit. Our 2015 Playwright in Residence is Christopher Daniels. Daniels, who most recently wrote and starred in his own one-man show at GLM, is working fervently on a new project that is set to premiere next year. However, in order to complete his project he needs your help! He is looking for personal anecdotes, stories, and feelings relating to LGBTQ culture and the bar scene over the past 50 years - specifically 1973, 1993, and 2013. You do not need to identify as LGBTQ in order to fill out the survey, as long as you have experience with the LGBTQ community. All responses are anonymous. Daniels will simply use responses to ensure his work is historically accurate and reflects authentic emotions of the time. Thank you in advance for you help!
